HEIL

 

Links to the Helbron family come from the marriage of Johann Rudolph Helbron (RN=8) to Margarethe Heil (RN=9), daughter of Mathias Heil, Sr. and Barbara Hockert, on 11 Feb 1873 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., MO. The entire Heil family immigrated to the U.S. aboard the Germania, arriving in New York from Rotterdam, The Netherlands on 5 Aug 1864. It is unclear if the family disembarked at New York and proceeded to St. Louis by land or whether they traveled via another ship to New Orleans and then on to St. Louis. To-date, no passenger list has been found to indicate anyarrival in New Orleans. Mathias Heil had been a riverboat pilot in his native Germany, but perhaps at the age of 49, he elected not to pursue that rigorous career following his arrival in St. Louis.

Daniel was born Oct 1864, place unknown; died 8 Jul 1933 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA. [NOTE 6: Based on census records, there is conflicting information on Daniel's birth date and place. The 1900 Census said he was born "Oct 1864" in Germany (which was incorrect) and immigrated in 1864 but it is unclear if he was born prior to or after his arrival; the 1910 Census has "Dan S.", "47", born in MO, but his parents were born in Ireland; the 1920 Census gave his age as "52" (or born ca 1868) and said both he and his parents were born in MO! The 1920 Census listed his wife as "Bertha", age 50, born in Germany, which was off by 7 years! Also living with them was Bertha's brother, listed as "Peter John Heil", age 53, and single. His age was also off by 7 years! The 1930 Census of Los Angeles Co., CA listed his age as "56" and her's at "54", but incorrect; she does appear in the 1940 Census of Los Angeles Co., CA as "Bertha Scannell", "70", and "widowed" and said she was living in the same house in Apr 1935; both were listed in the 1932 CA Voter Registrations; they were listed in the 1930 Census, Los Angeles Co., CA, but their ages were incorrect based on earlier censuses.] [NOTE 7: A Daniel M. Scannell  does appear in the 1932 CA Voter Registrations; a "David M. Scannell" is listed in the CA Death Index for 1933 and is assumed to be Daniel .] Both Daniels's and Bertha's burial locations remain unknown but assumed to be in the Los Angeles area. Married Johann Welsch, son of Nikolas Welsch and Magdelena Pinter, on 26 Jun 1851 in Mettlach, Saarland, Germany. RN=4343. Johann was born 18 Nov 1825 in Besseringen, Saarland, Germany; death date and place unknown. [NOTE 1: According to the Familienbuch Mettlach, a Johann Welsch, both of his parents, his wife, and two young daughters immigrated in or after 1854 but no passenger list has been found to-date. They were initially thought to have settled in or near Roxbury, Dane County, WI, and moved subsequently to adjacent Sauk Co., WI. However, Wisconsin census and other records indicate that, despite the name and age coincidences, this Johann Welsch said was from Bavaria and his wife's name was Elizabeth Mertens, not Heil, and that they were married in WI, not Germany. They had at least 8 children; both parents and some of their descendants are buried in Sauk City, Saulk Co., WI.] [NOTE 2: A Nikolaus Welsch was listed in "The Wisconsin Magazine of History, Vol. 20:2 (Dec. 1936)"  and the reference cited was "Information on the Emigration from the District of Merzig during the Years 1834-1874 (to North America)." This reference gave the arrival year as 1853 which agrees with the Familienbuch Mettlach entry cited above. However, no definitive passenger lists have been found to-date showing other arriving family members for either Welsch family.] Confirmed children:

              Married Johann Pinter, son of Peter Pinter and Maria Marion, at St. Gangolf's Church, on 4 Jul 1863 in Besseringen, Saarland, Germany. RN=869. Johann was born 8 Apr 1836 in Schwemlingen, Saarland, Germany; died of hemiplegia (a stroke resulting in paralysis of one side of the body) on 12 Jun 1891 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., MO. 1860, 1880 Censuses, St. Louis Co., MO. [NOTE 1: Dates confirmed by death certificate.] He immigrated to the U.S. prior to the Heil family from Havre, arriving in New Orleans aboard the Charlemagne on 25 May 1854. [NOTE 2: He apparently returned to Germany to marry Anna Maria, but was mistakenly listed on the 1864 passenger list of the Germania as "Johann Heil." Surprisingly, neither he nor any of his three daughters appear in the 1870 Census of St. Louis, leading to speculation that the family may have returned to Germany, although no return passenger list has been found to confirm this. He does, however, appear in the 1880 Census as a widower with three daughters.] She is buried at Sts.
