SMREKAR/SMREKER

Links to the Helbron family come from the marriage of John Jacob Helbron to Maria Theresia Smreker in Spielerville (present-day Subiaco), Logan County, AR on 19 Feb 1907. She was the eldest daughter of the immigrant, Stephen Smrekar, from Osojnik (ō-soy'-nik), Carniola, Austria (present-day Slovenia), and is thought to have arrived in New York on 25 Mar 1867 aboard the steamer New York from Bremen. The manifest listed him as "Stephan Smrehr (or Smrekr"), age 28, merchant, but from Germany, not Austria! Since he spoke German, it is likely that the list preparer just assumed he was German. It is also significant that the two men listed with him had Slovenian surnames that appeared in the same local Church records.

In Slovene, the origin of the surname is from the topographic name derived from smreka (spruce fir or evergreen), likely denoting someone who lived in a region where evergreen conifer trees grew.

Family legend and census records indicated that Stephen came to the U.S. between 1865 and 1870. According to a document written by his son Henry, "he landed in New York Sept. 15^th 1865. He worked on a farm in the State of New York" supposedly to earn enough money to bring his siblings to America. However, no passenger list indicating any arrival in 1865 has ever been located. Assuming that the 1867 passenger list is the correct one, it appears then, that Stephen did not return home but presumably sent money home for passage of his three siblings, although he has yet to be found in the 1870 Census. If he did return home, no other promising passenger list for his return voyage has ever been found! According to the register of births, marriages, and deaths of parishioners of their home parish in Semiĉ (known as the "Status Animarum", or "State of Souls"), all five of the surviving siblings immigrated! And, with one possible exception, it appears that they came at separate times (see discussion in #4 below). In addition, also according to the "Status Animarum", two of his surviving step-brothers and two step-sisters also immigrated, likely following the death of Stephen's step-mother in 1886.

Following his arrival in the U.S., Stephen (or someone), for reasons unknown, changed the surname spelling slightly to Smreker, which is the way all of his descendants spell it today. The same family legend also said that Stephen came to Belleville, IL in 1866 and "went into the dry goods business", but a thorough search of Belleville, East St. Louis, and even St. Louis, MO in the 1870 Census revealed no Smreker or similar surnames. Unfortunately, there are no existing tax records for that period to verify such a business venture. This same account further said that in 1878, Stephen sold the "business" and "bought a 200-acre farm in Logan Co., AR where they raised cotton, corn, wheat, and livestock". If the legend of a "dry goods" business is correct, he apparently chose not to continue this line of work since all subsequent census records list Stephen's occupation as "Farmer".

The first solid evidence of the three siblings (two brothers and one sister), in the U.S. is in the marriage records of St. Liborius Church in Mud Creek (now St. Libory), St. Clair Co., IL. These records indicate that Stephen and his sister, Maria, were both married on the same date, 7 June 1875, in what was possibly a double wedding ceremony where their brother, Mathias, was a witness. Curiously, other than those records, nothing in these family legends mentions what happened to the other siblings and has led to some speculation that there may have been a family "rift" between the siblings.

A professional researcher specializing in Slovenian genealogy has speculated that Stephen had likely been conscripted for military service in the Austrian Army at the age of 17. At that time, the normal term of service was seven years, which would explain his age at the time of his arrival in the U.S. and his subsequent marriage in 1875. The same may also have been the case with his brother, Mathias. However, none of the known family legends mention any prior military service for either man!

About 1878, with the offer of cheap railroad land and the urging of the then Bishop of Arkansas, Edward Fitzgerald, to settle German-speaking Catholic families in the region, Stephen moved, along with his family and his mother-in-law, Antonia Beske, to Spielerville (present-day Subiaco), Logan Co., AR.

In 2004, evidence was located that Stephen's younger brother, Mathias, and one of his sisters, Maria (neé Smrekar) Treye, had moved to Clinton Co., IA sometime between 1876 and 1878, likely coincident with Stephen's move to Arkansas. This evidence indicated that these two siblings were Stephen's and their respective lineages are included below. Conclusive proof was finally found in 2007 when entries in the 1925 State Census of Clinton Co., IA confirmed that Mathias was Stephen's brother since it listed his parents' names. Unless there was some kind of a "rift", why Mathias and Maria elected not to follow Stephen to Arkansas remains a family mystery. In addition, somewhat surprisingly, none of these family legends mention any further communication between families!

In 2008, Internet correspondence provided valuable links to Stephen's sister, Maria (neé Smrekar) Treye, who settled in Clinton Co., IA and to his step-sister, Margarethe (Marjeta) (neé Smrekar) Ogulin, and her daughter, Marjeta (Maria) (neé Ogulin) Tisovich. The daughter's 1907 passenger list confirmed that she was from Osojnik, stated that her father's given name was Mathias, and her final destination was Ely, St. Louis Co., Minnesota.

He listed his residence as "Rudolfswerth, Österreich" (now Novo Mesto, Slovenia; ~18 km NNW of Osojnik). This is the same "Martin Smircker", age 20, from "Austria", who arrived in New York from Hamburg aboard the Gellert on 27 Oct 1893, but with a final destination listed as "San Franzisco".] [NOTE 7: The only close match found in the 1900 Census of Unita Co., WY was that of a "Martin Urekar", age 28, a "Coalminer", and listed his immigration year as "1893", but his birth date as "Jan 1872". Also listed was a wife, Mary, age 28, born in "Austria", and they had been married 4 years, with no children. The only close match in the 1910 Census "Bartender" at a saloon along with a wife, Mary, age 36. They had been married 15 years with no children. They also appear in the 1915 City Directory of Trinidad, Las Animas Co.,, CO as "Martin Orekar". This is likely the same family but census and cemetery records confirm surname as "Orekar", so not absolutely positive that this is RN=1706!] No known children.

The 1900 Census stated her immigration date as 1873 and said she was widowed; the 1910 Census listed her as "Mary Troy", age 66, but no immigration date was provided. [NOTE 1: There was a "Marie Smickar", age 29, and a companion, "Anna Smickar", age 16, who arrived in New York (Castle Garden) on 25 Jun 1872 aboard the Hansa from Bremen, Germany. Marie's age matches, but Anna's age does not! Her younger sister would have been about 22. However, this list said they were from "Germany", not "Austria", although they likely spoke German. He is assumed to have arrived in New York on 11 Aug 1869 aboard the Westphalia from Bremen, listed as "Joh Frey". RN=632. 1880 Census, Clinton Co., IA, 1885, 1905, 1915, 1925 State Censuses, IA, 1900, 1910, 1920 Censuses, Clinton Co., IA. Family legend said he came to the U.S. with two sisters, but no passenger list has been found to-date to substantiate this; he is actually thought to have arrived in Baltimore, MD on 22 Nov 1869 aboard the Ohio from Bremen, Germany, but without any siblings. He was listed as "Matthias Smerker" from "Oestereich and in the 1900 Census, listed his immigration year as "1870". He was a witness at his brother, Stephan's wedding in 1875. [NOTE 1: 1885 State Census of Iowa has "Smrakar"; 1900 Census has "Smrekar"; the 1905 State Census has "Smerker"; the 1910, 1915 State, and 1920 Censuses all have "Smarkar"; 1925 State Census of IA has "Smaker".] [NOTE 2: His 1927 obituary said he was the father of seven children, four of which were still living, and that "he came to America at the age of 23", or ca 1846 .]

Married Anna Simonich, daughter of Jacob Simonich and Maria Majerle, on 1 May 1881 in Waterford Twp., Clinton Co., IA. RN=4987. Anna was born 22 Oct 1858 in Austria (present-day Slovenia); died 5 Jul 1954 in Houston, Harris Co., TX. 1930, 1940 Censuses, Harris Co., TX. She is thought to have immigrated from Bremen to New York (Castle Garden) aboard the General Werder on 7 Jun 1880, listed as "Anna Simonetz", age 24, from "Bohemia", and with a final destination of "Iowa". This conflicts slightly with her birth year and with the above date of her marriage, but per the 1900 Census, she immigrated in 1880. The 1915 State Census said she had been in the U.S. for 37 years, or ca 1878. The 1900 Census also indicated that she had 7 children but only 4 still living. [NOTE 3: In the 1930 and 1940 Censuses of Harris Co., TX, she was living with her youngest daughter, Rose C. (Smrekar) Phillips, but in the 1930 Census, she listed her immigration year as 1885. In the 1940 Census, her name was spelled "Smerker".] [NOTE 4: Her death certificate listed her birth date as 22 Oct 1864 (89y, 8m, 13d) but the 1900 Census has "Oct 1858". Married Mathias (or Matija) Ogulin, son of Johann Ogulinand Margarethe Skala, on 23 Aug 1875 in Semiĉ, Carniola, Austria. RN=1545. Born ca 1848 in Cerovec, Carnolia, Austria; death date and place unknown, but probably in Austria. [NOTE 1: It appears that neither Marjeta (or Matija) immigrated since no passenger lists or census records with matching ages has ever been located.] [NOTE 2: A Josef Ogulin, age 51, arrived in the U.S. in 1893 but indicated he was living in Joliet, IL, but no passenger list has been found to indicate an earlier immigration. [NOTE 3: A "Matija Ogalin", age 36, from Bresova Reber (~1 km from Osojnik) immigrated to the U.S. aboard the Lahn, arriving in New York on 2 May 1899 from Bremen. He listed his destination as Ely, MN and was to join an "Uncle". Minnesota death records do list a Matija (Matt) Ogalin (or Ogulin) who was born 7 Aug 1889 in Semiĉ and died in Ely, St. Louis Co., MN on 25 Oct 1939. This is the "Matt Oglin" listed in the 1930 Census of St. Louis Co., MN as age 43, single, and had arrived in the U.S. in 1907. His death certificate said this Matija Ogulin was the son of Anton Ogulin.] Children:

He listed his age as "24", and while not an exact age match, he did say he was from "Cerovec", about 9 km south of Osojnik, but unfortunately, his final destination was illegible. ] [NOTE 5: A second possibility was a "Johan Ogulin" who arrived in New York (Ellis Island) aboard the Hudson on 23 Jun 1907 from Harve, France. He listed his final destination as Ely, MN, but his age at only "16". This could have been the son of Josef Ogulin (see above) who, along with his father, were listed in the 1910 Census of Tuolumne Co., CA. [NOTE 6: To further complicate the issue, a "John Ogulin" (listed as a non-immigrant alien) arrived in New York (Ellis Island) on 3 Jun 1908 aboard the Kronprinz Wilhelm from Cherbourg, France. He was listed as a "Merchant" and age "40", which was way too old, but said his father was Mathias Ogulin from Semiĉ, and his destination was Joliet, IL which was also his "last residence".] Descendants, if any, unknown.

[NOTE 1: According to the Status Animarum, he also immigrated, probably arriving in New York (Castle Garden) aboard the Trave from Bremen, Germany on 16 Apr 1887 at the age of 17, which may have coincided with the death of his mother in 1886. However, assuming that 7 years of military service was required, this immigration date would be of a different person unless he simply left to avoid the draft!] 1910 Census, Cascade Co., MT; 1920 Census, Stearns Co., MN; 1930 Census, Benton Co., WA.

She is thought to have immigrated aboard the Werra, arriving in New York on 23 May 1891 from Bremen, Germany via Southampton, England, but not confirmed. [NOTE 2: Unable to locate the family in the 1900 Census but she is thought to have died in or shortly after the birth of their 5^th child, but not confirmed since no death or burial record have been located to-date! The 1910 Census says her last 3 children were born in Montana but the 1920 Census record says Joseph was born in Illinois.] Children:
